Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to support the unique learning styles of each child within a group setting. We offer a blend of open-ended and structured activities that promote literacy, numeracy, language, creativity, and social-emotional development. Throughout the day, children participate in small and large group activities such as circle time, music, creative movement, art, science, and dramatic play, all of which are essential for building social skills, self-expression, and a sense of belonging. We place great emphasis on uninterrupted play, allowing children the time and space to build relationships, refine social skills, and explore their interests. Our values-based curriculum promotes citizenship, social justice, and a strong sense of community, ensuring that each child feels valued and included. The outdoors serves as an extension of our classroom, providing additional opportunities for exploration and discovery. Parents are engaged partners in their child's education, and together, we create a supportive environment where children can grow, learn, and flourish.

Established in 1939, Belvedere Nursery School is the oldest nursery school in Southern Marin. From the beginning, our dedicated teachers have lovingly supported children through play and meaningful projects—scaffolding emerging skills, fostering self-regulation, and nurturing social-emotional growth. We provide hands-on experiences in a joyful and supportive environment, where children engage in problem solving and enhance acquisition of cognitive and linguistic skills within our developmental play-based curriculum. Our students leave with a lasting love of learning—and often, lifelong friendships. Early childhood education foundational theory is embedded in our play-based curriculum, and substantiated by current research in brain development, creating a highly valuable learning environment for enriched and optimal cognitive growth and development. Our program fosters creativity, stimulates the imagination, cultivates an inner sense of trust and autonomy, and supports cognitive, physical and social development. Our teachers are highly qualified and trained in early childhood education, and we maintain a 6:1 child-to-teacher ratio across all programs. Both directors and teachers work closely with each child, maintaining open and ongoing communication with parents to support the unique needs of each child. Formal parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year, offering thoughtful insights into each child’s development and providing an opportunity to address any questions or concerns. The Grove Preschool is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Families may choose between the enrollment options to best suit their needs: Extended Day Program: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Full Day Program: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Partial-Day Program: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.
We strive to offer flexibility for families while maintaining a consistent, nurturing rhythm for our children. We are open during the 9 month school year and close for regular school breaks such as winter and spring break. In addition to our school-year program, we offer a five-week summer camp called Camp Teva. Camp enrollment is available on a week-to-week basis, providing flexibility for families during the summer months.

    Admission:

The Grove Preschool accepts applications year-round for children 18 months and older. We begin offering school tours in October, with weekly tour opportunities available through January. Tours are an essential first step in our admissions process, and we ask that families complete a Post-Tour Questionnaire after visiting to help us understand your child and family’s needs. Enrollment offers for the upcoming school year, which begins in August, are typically extended starting in March.

    Class Size:

The Grove Preschool is home to five vibrant classrooms, each serving between 10–15 children with two dedicated teachers in each room. Our low teacher-to-child ratio allows for strong, nurturing relationships and responsive, individualized care. We are also supported by a team of four additional staff members who work in all of our classrooms, offering flexible support where it’s most needed throughout the day. Children are placed in classrooms based on age, ensuring developmentally appropriate experiences and routines. At the same time, we deeply value mixed-age play and provide many opportunities for children to interact, learn, and grow alongside peers from other classrooms. These cross-group connections help build a strong sense of community, empathy, and collaborative learning.

Tree Urchins is a nature-immersion program designed to supplement and enrich your child's early schooling experiences. On our adventures, kids use their curious minds and sense-craving bodies to test out their place in relation to earth’s elements. Young children learn best by observing and touching their surroundings, and we encourage them to slow down long enough to listen to nature as well. As we wander, we also wonder: Can I use dead branches to build a fort? Does a lineup of rocks dam up the stream? How high up the tree is comfortable for me? The kids discover the endless loose parts of the natural world as they conduct their experiments, and gradually incorporate these in play to satisfy a strong desire for peer connection.
