ADVENTURES IN CULINARY CUISINE

By: Amanda Hyslop  | March 15, 2024

Last year, when I was approached to host a fundraising event for my children's school district I found myself grappling with hesitancy. These hesitations were not just about the practical aspects of event planning but also about stepping out of my comfort zone in community involvement and leadership. As someone who often prefers supporting roles, coordinating with the district fundraising team and rallying support from the community felt a bit overwhelming. Yet it also presented a unique opportunity for me to step up in a way that aligns with my values.

At that time, I was reading Michelle Obama’s 'The Light We Carry', a book that stirred me to reflect on community and embodying my authentic role within it. If you haven’t read it; it is a must!  My friend, Setia, equally inspired by Obama’s book, particularly the concept of the 'kitchen table of friends' - a place for diverse, supportive women sharing candid conversations- suggested we infuse this spirit into an event. Fueled by our shared inspiration and the request to support our schools, we decided to take on the challenge. Thus, 'Adventures in Culinary Cuisine' was born, a hands-on cooking experience to bring our community's parents together, not just for fundraising, but also for connecting and mirroring the communal warmth championed by Michelle Obama's book.

After much brainstorming Setia and I decided to host a unique cooking class centered around the simple yet delightful wonton. We carefully crafted οur menu: appetizers included edamame, eggrolls, fresh strawberries, and rice crackers. The star of the show, our wontons, were a hands-on experience for our guests, 10 attendees plus the ςε two co-hosts. Each participant would learn how to fold 10-12 delicate wonton wrappers, stuffing them with pork, shrimp, cilantro, or vegetarian tofu and mushrooms, accompanied by a nourishing soup of cabbage and noodles.

The day arrived for us to gather. In the welcoming ambiance of our arranged space, Setia took the lead, demonstrating the art of folding wontons into perfect triangles and gold ingots. As our hands worked diligently, mine like a novice juggler- Setia’s more with the precision of a swiss watch maker- the room buzzed with more than just culinary activity. We shared stories about our kids, laughing over their antics and empathizing with each other over parenting hurdles. It became evident how food, a fundamental element of culture, has the incredible power to bring people together.

This event underscored how vital such gatherings are, providing a space for open dialogue about parenting and community. In coming together, we create support systems that enrich parenting. Community involvement is indeed an element of joyful parenting.

These kinds of events are great for parents to connect. We get to swap stories, share tips, and offer a few life hacks. Plus, they add a bit of levity from the daily grind of carpooling, weekend kid chaos, and the never-ending to-do list around the house.

Kicking off this gathering seemed like a big task at first, full of uncertainties and expectations. But looking back, I’m really glad I went for it. The vibe we created definitely made it all worthwhile, and it deepened my appreciation for the incredible individuals in my neighborhood. As a memento of the party's awesome atmosphere, I'm excited to share the recipe from the event - a delightful wonton dish that is as much a treat for the taste buds as this experience has been for my heart. Compliments to Setia.
