AMELIA PLUMB PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stephanie Christopher   |   March 15, 2024

Amelia Plumb has been photographing families for 15 years. She started her photography business when her kids were babies. And now they're teenagers! They moved from Piedmont to Marin in 2019 and joined SMMC to connect with local families. As a fellow mom, Amy truly understands how to capture each unique family dynamic. The Crier interviewed Amy to understand how she makes a family photo session into art!

How did you become a photographer?

I fell in love with photography at a young age, and by the time I got to high school, you’d often find me in the dark room developing my own film or out on campus capturing moments in my classmates’ lives.  After finishing college, I pursued a high-tech marketing and sales career. But after a few years, I couldn’t deny that photography was what made my heart really sing. So I went out on my own and haven’t looked back since.

Why did you decide to specialize in family photography?

I'm passionate about freezing moments that tell unique stories, and family photography became my avenue for that. I've always been drawn to the authenticity and emotion found in everyday family life. It all started when I realized the power a photograph has to capture not just faces, but the essence of relationships and connections. I decided to specialize in family photography because I loved photographing my own family, and I wanted to contribute to preserving candid moments that define family bonds.  And when I was new to Marin (and to SMMC), photography was an incredible way to connect with other families.

How do you approach a family photo session?

I begin by getting to know the family, understanding their dynamics, and identifying what makes them uniquely beautiful. My style is a mix of natural, candid moments and gently guided poses. I believe in creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, often choosing locations that resonate with the family's personality. While I appreciate posed shots for their timeless quality, my emphasis is on capturing spontaneous, real interactions that reflect love and connections.

How do you build rapport with families to make them feel comfortable during a photo session?

Building a connection with families is at the heart of my approach. Even before the photo session, I aim to make them feel like we're old friends through open and friendly communication. Understanding their dynamics and what makes each family tick is key. During the session, I take the time to chat, engage with the kids, and let everyone be themselves. I'm not just there to take photos; I'm there to share in their joy, making the whole experience enjoyable. By the time we start shooting, it feels less like a formal session and more like capturing moments.
How do you strike a balance between posed and candid shots in family photography?

I kick things off with some easy-going poses just to get everyone warmed up. As the session unfolds, I shift toward capturing the unplanned, genuine moments. I like to throw in prompts or activities that evoke real emotions and interactions. It's in those candid laughs, goofy faces, and unexpected hugs that the magic happens.

What are your future goals as a family photographer?

I'm all about infusing more heart and creativity into my work. I want to dive into projects that celebrate the unique stories of each family – maybe explore how different traditions and cultures shape our connections. I love how SMMC brings all kinds of families together, and I want to continue to do what I can to support that mission!

Amelia Plumb lives in Tiburon with her two teenagers. A California native, she has photographed families as well as business professionals for over fifteen years. When not working or spending time with her family she enjoys going to the movies with friends, baking or cooking something healthy.
