THE REDWOODS: A COMMUNITY OF SENIORS
By: Sarah Dobrovolny | February 1, 2024
There is something very special about bringing young children and elders together. Could it be that they have a similar freedom of spirit, an exuberance for life? Whatever it may be, there is joy at its core. Sometimes, though, loneliness sets in with age, and that is where groups like SMMC and families like our members can play a key role in bringing a bit more joy to the scene.
SMMC has a long relationship with The Redwoods, a Community of Seniors in Mill Valley. Over the years, we’ve held Wisdom & Wiggles events: Easter egg hunts, Halloween parades, and this month a Valentine’s Day-themed visit. On Thursday, February 8 we hope you’ll join us for a sweet gathering with some of the residents as we deliver handmade valentines.
If you’re interested to know more about The Redwoods, read on. I had the pleasure of interviewing Sara Collins-Bridge, Volunteer Coordinator, about why this community of seniors is so special, and how we can all be more involved.

What is the single most important thing you want everyone to know about The Redwoods?
The Redwoods is an inviting, accepting, and active community. The residents create a welcoming atmosphere and thrive on their independence and relationships.
For someone who is unfamiliar with your organization, can you give us the elevator pitch?
The Redwoods, a Community of Seniors, offers safe and affordable living for seniors. Active older adults of various ages and interests come together as one community here. Residents take pride in their independence and lead many of our 70+ weekly programs. Our gorgeous grounds surrounded by redwoods and marsh create an ideal setting.
How and why did you get involved with The Redwoods?
I got involved with The Redwoods because I knew the name as my husband works across the street at Tam High as a resource teacher and baseball coach. I quickly learned of their reputation and during the interview process saw how happy the employees are. Working with older adults was not my first career but I plan on it being my forever career.
When you think about the work that your organization does, what are you most proud of?
I am so proud of the strength and attitudes of our residents. Transitioning into retirement living can be an adjustment and it can sometimes be hard to want to get involved, which is a major key to a positive transition. Our residents are resilient and dive into our programs to help enrich this next stage of their lives. I love seeing residents try out new classes or experiences, proving there is always a chance to find something new you love.

Are there opportunities for SMMC families to volunteer with The Redwoods?
Always! Our residents love this type of interaction. Historically, we have partnered with SMMC and similar groups for visits such as handing out valentines or partaking in our Halloween costume parade, etc. But, there is always potential for a recurring event or program, a craft or interactive reading activity for example. As long as there is a consistent schedule, we are open to working on creating these additional experiences.

Is there anything else you’d like our members to know?
We are always inviting new volunteers of all ages to The Redwoods! We work around the volunteer’s schedule and have a big variety of opportunities. This is such a fun and rewarding place to give back.
