SHARE THE BOUNTY

By: Kate Van Hooser   |   May 5, 2022

My name is Kate Van Hooser and I am a sophomore in high school. I started Share the Bounty with my brothers when I was in 5th grade. Share the Bounty strives to reduce food waste and hunger in Marin by helping people donate their homegrown fruits and vegetables to the SF-Marin Food Bank.

We got the idea when we were on a walk in our neighborhood with our grandma. She pointed out a lemon tree that had so many lemons and lots of them had already fallen to the ground. She suggested we knock on their door and offer to bring the lemons to the food bank. We thought that was a pretty good idea and that there might be lots of people who had more fruit than they could eat.

We called the SF-Marin Food Bank and learned that they accept homegrown produce and we came up with the name Share the Bounty. We started by telling our friends and posting on NextDoor and now we’ve donated over 16,000 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you have extra fruit, email us at sharethebountymarin@gmail.com and we can arrange to come pick it up at your house. If you need assistance harvesting, we can arrange that too! Or, if you prefer, you can drop off at our house. You can learn more about us at our website: www.sharethebountymarin.org.

If you don’t have a home garden but want to support our efforts, please post about us on your local NextDoor. It really helps us spread the word. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and share our posts with your friends!

I hope this story shows you that even kids can make a difference. Thanks for reading about Share the Bounty!
