EMPOWERING FAMILIES: HOW SMMC GRANTS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE ACROSS MARIN
By: Sarah Dobrovolny and Mikaela Mora | December 9, 2025
Every year, SMMC proudly supports local organizations that strengthen families, uplift children, and foster community connection. This year, our grants helped fund essential programs serving parents, children, and youth throughout Marin County.
These stories are a testament to what happens when mothers and families support one another. Whether it’s providing diapers, delivering educational and skill-building programs, or funding life-changing experiences for youth, every grant we give reflects the compassion and commitment of our members.
Thank you for helping us make this impact possible. Together, we’re building a stronger, kinder, and more connected Marin.
Supporting Families of Children with Special Needs
At Matrix Parents Network at Marin CIL, SMMC’s $2,000 grant has helped hundreds of families access critical information, resources, and community. Since March, Matrix has hosted four active support groups for parents and guardians of children with disabilities or special education needs—in both English and Spanish—and moderated an online community of Spanish-speaking parents.
They’ve also offered 15 trainings for parents on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), conflict resolution, and advocacy skills, reaching over 6,000 community members through digital resource distribution, including SMMC’s very own Parents’ Survival Guide 2025. Through these programs, Parent Advisors at Matrix CIL empower families to understand their rights, access services, and play active, meaningful roles in their children’s education.
Providing Essentials for Growing Families
The Postpartum Support Center continues to be a lifeline for parents navigating the early years of raising young children. Thanks to a $4,000 SMMC grant, the organization provided more than 11,750 diapers and 235 packs of wipes to local families—meeting a basic but vital need.
At an average cost of $0.30 per diaper, these supplies help ease financial stress for parents and ensure that babies have what they need to stay healthy and comfortable. This simple act of care has ripple effects, giving families a little more breathing room to focus on bonding, healing, and building stability during the postpartum period.
Creating Opportunities for Foster Youth
Through our support of the Marin Foster Care Association’s Opportunity Project, to which we granted $2,500, SMMC helped open doors to enrichment and empowerment for local foster youth. The Opportunity Project funds individualized experiences that nurture children’s passions and confidence—because every child deserves not only to survive, but to thrive.
One grant helped a college-bound teen purchase a new bicycle so she could get to class independently—a small but powerful step toward autonomy. Another gave a foster child the chance to experience horseback riding, promoting healing and self-expression. Each story reflects the heart of this program: creating moments of joy, growth, and self-discovery for young people who deserve every opportunity to shine.
Nourishing Families at Homeward Bound of Marin
With rising food costs and reductions in federal nutrition assistance, SMMC’s $5,000 grant to Homeward Bound of Marin came at a crucial time. The funds provided $100 grocery store gift cards to 91 families in Homeward Bound’s shelter and housing programs, helping parents put a holiday meal on the table and celebrate Thanksgiving with dignity and comfort.
For families working to overcome homelessness, these gift cards represent more than food—they offer hope, stability, and a chance to share a moment of normalcy during the holidays. Homeward Bound expressed deep gratitude for the community’s generosity, which directly supports families rebuilding their lives.
Building Confidence and Skills at Gilead House
At Gilead House, SMMC’s $3,500 grant helped bring to life a series of life-changing workshops designed to equip mothers with tools for health, independence, and self-confidence. Programs included Nutrition & Creative Culinary (learning to prepare nourishing meals on a budget), Exercise & Wellness (integrating movement and mindfulness), and Grocery Budgeting (stretching every dollar and reducing financial stress).
For many moms, these classes have transformed food from a source of anxiety into one of empowerment and joy. By supporting Gilead House, SMMC helped create a space where women can heal, grow, and gain the skills to build stronger futures for their families.
Empowering Single Mothers Toward Long-Term Stability
With a $2,500 grant, Marin County Cooperation Team (MCCT) provided critical support to five single-mother households in their Safety Net Services program. Through needs-based grants and personalized case management, families received assistance with housing, utilities, rental support, and other essential needs—ranging from one-time help to ongoing guidance. In addition, MCCT’s long-term empowerment program offers 1:1 goal-setting coaching and weekly life skills workshops on topics such as financial literacy, credit counseling, mental health, employment, and homeownership.
By fostering collaboration and leveraging community partnerships, MCCT empowers families to access vital resources, build stability, and work toward self-sufficiency and resilience.
