STRONGER TOGETHER: SUPPORTING MARIN FAMILIES AND YOUTH

By: Sarah Dobrovolny and Mikaela Mora  |  September 2, 2025

At SMMC, giving back to our local community is a core part of who we are—and one of our newest philanthropy partnerships is with the Marin County Cooperation Team (MCCT).

Founded in 2020 as a grassroots, volunteer-led response to the COVID-19 crisis, MCCT has since grown into a powerful nonprofit working to transform the health, economic, and social outcomes for Marin’s most marginalized communities—focused on Marin City. The organization’s work is bold, collaborative, and deeply rooted in equity.

MCCT is leading transformational work through three foundational pillars: Safety Net Services, Youth Empowerment, and Community Coalitions.

  • Safety Net Services provides direct support like needs-based grants (such as food, clothing, diapers, rental/utility assistance), case management, and life skills training to families facing urgent challenges.
  • Youth Empowerment offers holistic mentorship, leadership development, enrichment activities, and opportunities like college tours or international basketball experiences for local youth.
  • Community Coalitions bring people together to address systemic inequities, foster cultural preservation, and build community power.

In 2024 alone, MCCT served over 800 individuals, hosted 3 health fairs, harvested hundreds of pounds of produce in their community garden, and mentored dozens of youth. They’re not just meeting needs—they’re building systems for lasting change.

where smmc comes in

We’re incredibly proud to stand alongside MCCT in support of the community members they serve. Over the past two years, SMMC members have supported MCCT’s mission in a variety of ways:

  • Volunteering alongside our kids in the Marin City Community Garden
  • Donating gifts, gift cards, car seats, and strollers to families in the Safety Net Services program during the holidays and beyond
  • Helping fund a Spring Break College Tour for middle schoolers through an SMMC community grant
  • Sponsoring MCCT’s upcoming Fall Fundraiser on September 18th

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

This partnership is growing, and we’d love for more members to join us in supporting MCCT’s work. Here’s a few ways to help:

  • Volunteer: Join a garden workday or explore mentorship opportunities.
  • Donate: Support the mission through financial contributions or by donating items to their upcoming silent auction.
  • Attend the Fundraiser: Be part of a powerful evening of community, storytelling, and impact on September 18th (tickets here). Hosted in MCCT’s Marin City Community Garden, the evening will feature appetizers from MCCT’s Culinary Business Incubator Program, where MCCT supports 8 local Marin City food entrepreneurs in selling their food for profit, as well as a guided garden tour, a 2025 Partner of the Year award, and tabling and live testimonials from MCCT’s program participants.
  • Learn More & Spread the Word: Follow MCCT on Instagram, or sign up for their newsletter, to learn more about their work and how to engage with MCCT!

Together, we’re helping create a Marin where equity, empowerment, and community are at the heart of community life. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
