SUMMER MEMORY-MAKING: 8 EASY PHOTO TIPS FOR PARENTS

By: Amelia Plumb  |  June 3, 2025

Summer in Marin is a season made for memory-making—lazy beach days, golden hikes, late sunsets, and sticky fingers from melting ice cream. As a mom and photographer, I know how quickly these moments pass—and how important it is to capture them, even if you're not the one behind the lens professionally.

Whether you're staying local this summer or heading out on a fun family trip, here are eight simple photo tips to help you capture your family's summer story in a more meaningful (and beautiful) way.

1. Focus on the Little Things
Not every photo needs to be a perfectly posed group shot. Capture sandy toes, half-eaten popsicles, or your child’s wind-blown hair after a ride on the swings. These small details will transport you back instantly.

2. Use Golden Hour to Your Advantage
That soft, dreamy light right after sunrise or just before sunset? It’s your best friend. Take your family out for a walk or picnic during golden hour, and you’ll instantly get more flattering, magical photos—no filters required.

3. Get in the Frame
This one’s for all the moms out there who are always behind the camera. Hand your phone to someone else or use the timer. Your kids will want to remember you being there, too.

4. Try a Blurred Background (Portrait Mode)
Blurring the background can instantly elevate your image. On most smartphones, this is called portrait mode—and it works wonders for making your subject stand out. On a DSLR or mirrorless camera, use a wide aperture (like f/2.8 or f/1.8) to get that soft, dreamy background. It’s a beautiful way to bring focus to your child’s face, a flower they’re holding, or even that scoop of melting gelato.

5. Tell a Story With a Series
Try capturing moments in threes: before, during, and after a fun activity. For example, show your kids prepping for a beach day, building a sandcastle, and then passed out in the car on the ride home.

6. Don’t Stress the Mess
Messy hair, dirty hands, wild energy—embrace it. Some of the best summer memories are the chaotic, candid ones. Trust me, the “imperfect” moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most.

7. Play With Perspective
Get low to the ground to shoot from your child’s view. Or stand above them while they lay on a picnic blanket. Changing up your angle adds interest and makes everyday moments feel more creative.

8. Back It Up + Print It Out
At the end of summer, set aside an hour to back up your photos and create a simple album or photo book. Your future self (and your kids) will thank you.

Final Thought
You don’t need fancy equipment or perfect weather to make summer memories last. Just a little intention, your camera (or phone), and the reminder that real moments matter most.

And if you're staying local and want some relaxed professional photos where everyone can actually be in the frame—I'm here! I'd love to help you capture some fun-in-the-sun (or shade!) moments with your crew.
