THE HAUNTING OF CHRONIC ILLNESS: HOW IGNORING IT CAN LEAD TO FRIGHTENING CONSEQUENCES

By: Naomi Dicus, CHC AFMC | October 17, 2024

Halloween is the time of year when creativity and imagination run wild. We dress up as witches, ghosts, and goblins, delighting in a little scare here and there. But what if the scariest story of all is the one that’s brewing inside of our bodies? What if ignoring our body's subtle whispers of imbalance turns into a real-life horror show? Chronic health issues, when left untreated, can become the monsters lurking in the shadows of our lives.

The tale of chronic illness is not unlike a Halloween story. It starts quietly, almost innocuously, with symptoms that seem more like harmless bumps in the night than real threats. But as time goes on, these symptoms can evolve into something more sinister.

The Ghostly Whispers of the Body

Imagine waking up to the faint sound of whispers. At first, you dismiss them as figments of your imagination—just like those minor aches and pains, the occasional fatigue, or that nagging brain fog. These whispers are your body’s way of alerting you that something isn't quite right. But just like a ghost story, ignoring these whispers doesn’t make them disappear.

In functional medicine, we know that the body communicates through symptoms. These whispers are early warning signs that something is out of balance. But when we ignore these subtle hints, they can turn into loud, terrifying screams.

Think of untreated stress as a witch's brew bubbling away on the stove. At first, it's just stress—something we all deal with. But when left unchecked, it can lead to a frightening transformation. Stress can morph into high blood pressure, thyroid imbalances, and even autoimmune conditions. It's like watching a person slowly turn into a werewolf under the light of a full moon. The change is gradual but undeniable, and before you know it, the transformation is complete and much harder to reverse.

The Monsters of Chronic Disease

In the world of health monsters are chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. They don't appear overnight. They start as small, creeping symptoms—insulin resistance, high cholesterol, or inflammation. But as they go unchecked, they grow stronger and more menacing.

Diabetes is like the vampire of chronic illnesses. It slowly drains your life force, feeding on the body's energy and vitality. At first, you might notice increased thirst or fatigue. But as the vampire gains strength, it can lead to complications like losing eyesight, nerve damage, kidney failure, and atherosclerosis; becoming a relentless force, difficult to escape from once it has taken hold.

Cardiovascular disease is the werewolf. You might not notice it during the day when you're distracted by life's busyness. But at night, when things are quiet, you can feel it lurking. The occasional chest pain, shortness of breath, or elevated blood pressure are signs that the werewolf is near. When a heart attack or stroke strikes, it feels like an ambush—a sudden and terrifying attack that changes everything in an instant.

Cancer is the most frightening monster of them all—the shapeshifter. It can appear anywhere in the body, taking on different forms. It grows silently, often without any symptoms until it's too late. It’s the haunted presence that lurks in the shadows, spreading its malignancy. When cancer makes itself known, it’s like seeing the true face of the monster for the first time—shocking, devastating, and life-altering.

The Haunted House: Your Body

Your body is your sacred house, and just like a haunted mansion, it can harbor both light and darkness. When we ignore the signs of chronic imbalance, we allow the darkness to take root. The creaky floors, the drafty windows, and the unexplained noises are the symptoms we brush aside. But when we explore the house, confront the ghosts, and repair the damages, we can turn it back into a place of warmth and safety.

Functional medicine approaches the body like a haunted house that needs to be understood, not feared. By addressing the root causes of illness, we can dispel the ghosts and monsters lurking within. This means paying attention to diet, lifestyle, stress, and environment—all the factors that contribute to our overall health. It’s about being the hero in your own story, armed with knowledge and the power to change.

Banishing the Monsters

The good news is that this Halloween story doesn't have to end in horror. You have the power to change the narrative. By listening to your body's whispers and addressing them before they become screams, you can banish the monsters of chronic illness. Through functional medicine, we focus on prevention and healing, turning the haunted house into a sanctuary.

Start by assessing your own health story. Are there whispers you’ve been ignoring? Perhaps it's time to shine a light into those dark corners and face what lies within. It might be as simple as making dietary changes, managing stress, or getting regular check-ups. These steps can prevent minor imbalances from turning into monstrous conditions.

Be the Hero of Your Health Story

This Halloween, as you revel in the fun and fright of the season, take a moment to reflect on your own health. Are there scary symptoms you've been avoiding? Remember, the real horror story is not the monster under the bed but the chronic illness that can take over when we neglect our well-being.

Don’t let your health journey turn into a haunted tale. Be proactive, seek support, and embrace the power of functional medicine to transform your story from one of fear into one of hope and healing…And maybe skip the couple of pillowcases of candy this year.
