SUMMER OF JOY

By: Kristin Colsky Gavin | July 18, 2024

The summer conjures up images of children running happily through sprinklers, jumping bravely into cool blue pools, enjoying brightly colored popsicles, and staying up past their bedtimes to watch glowing orange sunsets. Along with these images comes a sense of lightheartedness, play, fun, exploration, and relaxation. We, as parents, can learn a lot from the way that children experience summer. We can get caught up in our ongoing responsibilities, both big and small, and coast through the seasons without stopping to really think about how we are spending our days, how we are living each moment. What if we could use that lightness that summer brings and try to spend each day stressing less and soaking up the joyful, simple moments more? We could connect to our inner child and remember the things that bring us feelings of joy and ease.

For children, play is serious business, imagination is non-negotiable, and creativity is second nature. This summer, I am intentionally giving myself permission to play more, to connect to the things that bring me joy, and to make time for those things without guilt. As moms, we do everything for our children, encouraging them as they play, learn, and grow. There is so much happiness, not to mention meaning, to be found in being a parent, and this is a lifelong gift.

Still, we can sometimes forget that it is also important to make time for things that we personally enjoy outside of motherhood. It is easy to think that there is just no time for things like hobbies in certain seasons of life, and sometimes there just truly isn’t. Life with babies and toddlers in particular has the tendency to crowd out anything besides work and family. However, chances are it will continue to feel like this as our children grow because there will always be something to distract us, some other to-dos that come our way, new and different challenges that will arise.

What I have realized as a mom is that the only way anything will happen is by taking one small step at a time, slowly chipping away at a project or pursuit and just starting without waiting for the perfect time. There will always be endless busy work, rooms to clean, and meals to cook. There will be sleepless nights and sick days that derail our plans to carve out that time to read, write, paint, exercise, find a quiet moment to think, or pursue that thing we have been dreaming about doing. But just finding micro-moments for ourselves, a few minutes here and there, can really add up. It might be relaxing and resting more, reconnecting to a hobby, spending time in nature, moving our bodies, or doing anything else that brings us joy and fulfillment.

As a Pilates instructor and business owner, I am someone who would love to work out for an hour at a time. When I have the time, it feels like a luxury, but it is not always possible to fit in. As far as movement goes, I have come to believe in the power of fitting in short workouts whenever it works. Just ten or twenty minutes can be enough to refocus our minds, show up better for others, lift our mood, build strength in our bodies, and so much more.

This summer, I encourage you to try to carve out time for yourself to play and explore, to pursue whatever it is that brings you joy, to let go of a need for productivity and do something just for fun, just because you want to, just because you enjoy it. Over time, a few minutes here and there just might add up to a happier, more fulfilled, and more relaxed version of yourself.
