EMBRACING NEW ROLES: THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND HEALTH IMPACTS OF FATHERHOOD

By: Naomi Dicus, CHC AFMC | June 20, 2024

Today, we are supporting our young boys in exploring diverse interests, whether that's playing with dolls, taking ballet classes, or dressing up as Elsa from Frozen. I believe that this openness to different roles from a young age will cultivate more sensitive, well-rounded men and fathers in the future. We can see in previous generations, those fortunate enough to experience the freedom of self-expression often have passed this valuable gift down to their sons, breaking out of the toxic masculinity culture wherein some Boomer and Gen-X boys were raised.

Fatherhood is not just a personal transformation but a profound journey that encompasses psychological, emotional, and physical changes from bachelor to leader of his pack. The role of a father involves complex and interconnected systems that influence not only his health but also the health of his family.

But no pressure!

Fathers play a vital role in the family; from the challenges men face in modern society, to their profound impact on family health dynamics.

The Psychological Impact of Fatherhood on Men's Health
Becoming a father is a major milestone that brings with it joy, responsibilities, and a significant psychological transition. Men may experience a range of emotions from excitement and pride to fear and anxiety. Functionally, this psychological shift can affect men’s mental health, manifesting in changes to stress levels, sleep patterns, and overall mood stability. Especially as they balance the work life and family life focus, just as many of their partners are doing; rushing home in time for a family dinner or reading a favorite Elephant and Piggie book.

Society is evolving beyond the outdated expectation that men must always be stoic and emotionally reserved. This shift is profoundly healthy, encouraging men to model emotional expression for their sons and daughters, who may then feel empowered to do the same.

Support systems are crucial in the modern-day family setting. Engaging in open communication with partners, seeking counsel from other fathers, or consulting healthcare professionals can help manage these emotional fluctuations. Additionally, fathers should be encouraged to prioritize self-care practices that bolster mental health, such as meditation, exercise, and adequate rest, which are essential for maintaining balance. Lucky for us, especially in the Bay Area, many large corporations are prioritizing family needs coming first before work (to a certain extent). This way a man can help the family as a whole by meeting from home with his team while his feverish kid slurps chicken soup on the couch watching Bluey.

The Role of Fathers in Supporting Maternal Health
Fathers also play a vital role in supporting the maternal health during pregnancy, which can have lasting effects on the mother’s physical and emotional well-being. The health of the mother is deeply intertwined with the support she receives from her partner. Fathers who are actively involved in pregnancy and postpartum can help reduce stress and anxiety for the mother, which in turn contribute to healthier pregnancy outcomes.

Practically, this support can manifest in various forms, including accompanying mothers to prenatal appointments, ensuring healthy cooking and nutritional needs are met, and fostering a calm and supportive home environment. Fathers who are informed and engaged can also help monitor and manage potential health concerns, acting as an advocate for their partner’s health needs.

Additionally many companies offer the father parental leave so even he can stay home during this special time with the mother and bond with their infant.

Modern Fatherhood Challenges
The landscape of fatherhood has evolved significantly, especially as societal norms about parenting roles continue to shift. Modern fathers are often expected to be more involved in direct caregiving than past generations, from changing diapers to managing bedtime routines. Most are still working a fulltime+ job outside of the home.

This increased involvement can lead to challenges in balancing work, personal health, and family life.

So, where does the balance lie? Is there an unspoken rule compelling fathers to always prioritize their family's needs over their own health and self-care? It's widely recognized that taking care of ourselves is essential before we can effectively care for others. Both fathers and mothers can experience real burnout if they neglect this balance.

Functionally, navigating these challenges requires a holistic approach to wellness. It’s also important for fathers to develop strategies that allow for personal health maintenance and effective stress management. This might include setting boundaries at work to protect family time, engaging in regular physical activity with their children, and cultivating hobbies that replenish their physical and mental energy.

In conclusion, the journey of fatherhood is rich with opportunities for growth and wellness. By embracing a functional medicine approach, fathers can better navigate the psychological and physical demands of parenting. This involves recognizing the interconnected nature of their health with that of their family, employing strategies to maintain above all balance, and fostering an environment that supports mutual health and well-being. Each step taken towards this integrated approach not only enhances their own health but also sets a foundation for healthier families.

So, this Father’s Day, let’s remember to send a special shout out to all the involved and caring fathers out there, who are juggling many roles, and also making sure they keep their own health a priority.
